A family visit to Natural Bridge Caverns is a day of discovery, excitement, and unforgettable memories—especially when you’re bringing young explorers along. If you’re planning your first trip with toddlers or young kids, here are a few parent-tested tips to help you make the most of your day.

1. Dress for the Cave—and the Sun

The cave stays a steady 70 degrees year-round, but with 99% humidity, it feels more like the mid-80s. That means no jackets needed for little ones—but you will want breathable clothes and sturdy, rubber-soled shoes for everyone in your group. And since there’s plenty to explore above ground too, don’t forget hats, sunscreen, and water bottles for sunny moments between adventures.

2. Leave the Stroller Behind (Just for the Cavern)

While strollers work great above ground at Natural Bridge Caverns, we don’t recommend bringing them into the cave itself. The pathways underground are damp, and include stairs—making them a tough match for wheels. Most young kids can manage the short walk on foot, and for little ones who need a break, a hands-free carrier is the way to go. And don’t worry, we have free stroller parking! Children under three can go into the cavern for free.

3. Don’t Miss Twisted Trails Tykes

Twisted Trails Tykes is the perfect place for your youngest adventurers to play, climb, and explore in a space just their size. With shaded seating for grown-ups and fun features designed for kids under 4 feet tall, it’s a must-do for families with toddlers. Bonus: it’s close to snacks, restrooms, and other family-friendly stops, making it an easy place to recharge.

4. Go at Their Pace

You’ll find plenty to do—from gem and fossil mining to our fun 5,000 square foot maze—but there’s no need to rush. Young kids often enjoy the simple things: the sound of water dripping in the cave, the thrill of walking through beautiful formations, or the joy of spotting a butterfly outside. We’ve even got fun family games like cornhole, giant jenga, and more! Build in time for breaks and encourage your littles to follow their curiosity. Some of the most magical moments happen when you slow down.

A few more things to keep in mind. We’ve got great food for all kinds of picky palettes and allergies (the gluten free pizza is a MUST). Our ice cream game is pretty amazing with Blue Bell, and we have Dippin’ Dots at the ready. Our shops are filled with loveable plushies and some pretty great educational kits too. Kids can even crack open a geode and see the sparkles hidden within.

Tours for Every Kind of Explorer

Whether your family is looking for a gentle walk or a full-on expedition, Natural Bridge Caverns offers tours for all comfort levels and ages. The Hidden Wonders Tour takes you deep into the cave system with spectacular formations, a sound-and-light show, and a smooth exit via a state-of-the-art conveyor, the BAT. For something truly unique, try the Lantern Tour—an early-morning trek lit only by your guide’s lantern and your own sense of wonder. Older kids and adventurous adults can tackle the Adventure Tours, which trade paved paths for true spelunking—complete with headlamps, crawling passages, and plenty of mud.

Share the Cavern History—and Life

Discovered in 1960 by four college students and opened to the public just four years later, Natural Bridge Caverns is more than a tourist destination—it’s a living landscape. Named a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the cavern system still evolves, drop by drop, as mineral-rich water builds formations that have taken thousands of years to grow. Above ground, the site serves as critical habitat for bats, birds, and pollinators while below, it offers glimpses into Texas’s geologic and archaeological past. Exploring here means walking through stories that are still unfolding.
